Midnight Reflection Scarf

A muted clay color used as the light yarn in this scarf reads as a neutral as it shows off the bird’s eye pattern. You can replace it if you like with any contrasting color in your version.

About this Project

Designer Sedona Rigsby combined clasped weft and twill in this scarf to create a bold and rich figure-ground contrast. Easy to set up and weave, the scarf features a simple bird’s eye twill using a fairly thick cotton yarn in the warp and silk in the weft. The result is a lightweight, irresistibly squishy piece with a modern appeal. She found the treadling and weaving to be rhythmic, meditative, and satisfying. Intuitively placed clasped-weft joins produce a subtle ripple effect along the length of the cloth. On one edge, the bird’s eye pattern shows clearly in contrasting yarn colors; the other edge has an understated black-on-black look.

Equipment
4-shaft loom, 15" weaving width; 12-dent reed; 1 shuttle and bobbin.

Yarns
Warp: Beam 3/2 organic cotton (1,260 yd/lb; Gist Yarn), Licorice, 627 yd.
Weft: Sero silk noil (2,468 yd/lb; Gist Yarn), Corvus and Farro, about 372 yd each.

Width in the reed: 14 ¹¹⁄₁₂".
Woven length: (measured under tension on the loom) 90".
Finished size: (after wet-finishing) 11¾" × 80" plus 6" fringe.
