About this Project

In addition to being a weaver, designer Shelby Moravec is also an avid gardener. She is frequently inspired by color combinations she sees in the natural world. A small section of an advancing twill design she was working on looked like the double wings of a dragonfly. Using that discovery, she designed a cloth with five sets of dragonflies across the width, separated by salmon pink stripes to set them off. Keeping in mind the lovely iridescence seen in real dragonfly wings, her fiber of choice was silk, primarily in shades of green and blue (because those are the colors of most of the dragonflies in her backyard)

Advancing point twill.

Equipment
8-shaft loom, 16" weaving width; 10- or 15-dent reed; 1 shuttle.

Yarns
Warp: 20/2 silk (2,744 yd/lb; Valley Yarns; WEBS), Hunter, 353 yd; Felt Green and Pacific, 450 yd each; Diva, 263 yd; Violet, 102 yd; Moss, 68 yd; Salmon, 45 yd.
Weft: 20/2 silk, Black, 1,015 yd.

Dimensions
Width in the reed: 15 ⁷⁄₁₅" (15-dent reed) or 15 ⁵⁄₁₀" (10-dent reed).
Woven length: (measured under tension on the loom) 78".
Finished size: (after wet-finishing) 14" × 72".
