Gather your scraps and put them to good use! Named for a dear friend with cold hands, these mittens can pull the loose ends of life together and bring warmth, cheer, and hope to those we love.
The yardage requirements are given per mitten because the two don’t need to match. You can use odd ends of about ten yards or less to create rows of dots or stripes. The DK or light worsted-weight yarn can be substituted with two strands of any fingering-weight yarn held together as needed.
For the larger size, use worsted- or heavy worsted-weight yarn, or hold three fingering-weight strands together. Here’s an opportunity to use up all the little bits of leftover yarn in your stash!
YARN 60 yd MC and 50 yd total CC per mitten in your choice of colors (see Notes). For size S/M: DK or light worsted weight (or two fingering-weight yarns held together). For size M/L: Worsted or heavy worsted weight (or three fingering-weight yarns held together).
NEEDLES Size S/M: size 5 (3.5 mm); size M/L: size 6 (4 mm) set of double-pointed (dpn) or long circular (cir) for magic loop. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
NOTIONS Markers (m); tapestry needle; smooth waste yarn to hold thumb stitches.
GAUGE Size S/M: 22 sts and 35 rnds = 4" in Colorwork Rib patt. Size M/L: 20 sts and 33 rows = 4" in Colorwork Rib patt.
FINISHED SIZE Size S/M: 7¼" (18.5 cm) circumference and 10½" (26.5 cm) length. Size M/L: 8" (20.5 cm) circumference and 11" (28 cm) length.
