The Open Carriage Gloves were inspired by the simple durable gloves and fingerless mittens worn by ladies of the Regency era for traveling and walking through the countryside. During that time, it was important for traveling mitts to be very plain and sturdy to withstand the elements and outdoor activity.
This design includes features of those traveling gloves. They have a slightly longer cuff that extends to the mid-forearm to accommodate different sleeve lengths and ward off chills. A small eyelet diamond pattern is featured near the cuff and across the knuckles, which can be easily omitted if you prefer.
YARN Quince & Co. Chickadee (100% wool; 181 yd [166 m]/1¾ oz [50 g]): #120 gingerbread, 1 (2, 2) skein(s).
NEEDLES Hand and thumb—size 4 (3.5 mm): set of double-pointed (dpn). Ribbing—size 3 (3.25 mm): set of dpn. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
NOTIONS Markers (m); waste yarn or stitch holder; tapestry needle.
GAUGE 24 sts and 32 rnds = 4" in St st on larger needles; 34 sts and 32 rnds = 4" in single rib on smaller needles.
FINISHED SIZE 6 2⁄3 (7 1⁄3, 8 1⁄3)" hand circumference, unstretched, and 10" long. Gloves shown measure 6 2⁄3".
