Blazing star, also known as gayfeather or Liatrus, is a native prairie plant that pollinators love, especially monarch butterflies. These fingerless mitts remind me of blazing star—they both have a vertical growth habit and are easily adaptable! The yarn, Prairie Spun from Brown Sheep, is a native-prairie yarn—a perfect match! The cable pattern and ribbing are quite elastic; unstretched, the smaller size measures 6½" (16.5 cm) but fits easily around an 8" (20.5 cm) hand.
YARN Brown Sheep Company Prairie Spun DK (100% U.S. wool; 256 yd [234 m]/3½ oz [100 g]; DK weight): Misty Mountain, 1 skein.
NEEDLES Size 5 (3.75 mm) (see Notes). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
NOTIONS Markers (m); 2 cable needles (cn); waste yarn to be used as a stitch holder; tapestry needle.
GAUGE 23 sts and 32 rnds = 4" (10 cm) in k2, p2 rib.
FINISHED SIZE 6½ (7¼)" (16.5 [18.5] cm) hand circumference (see Notes) and 8¼" (21 cm) long. Mitts shown measure 6½" (16.5 cm).
