Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel The House of the Seven Gables features “a rusty wooden house, with seven acutely peaked gables facing towards various points of the compass, and a huge, clustered chimney in the midst.” Inspired by the real historic house in Salem, Massachusetts, Mimi Seyferth designed these socks with steep columns of twisted-stitch peaks.
YARN The Woolly Thistle Rambler (80% white Dorset wool, 10% Corriedale wool, 10% gray Romney wool; 420 yd [384 m]/3½ oz [100 g]; fingering weight): Lichen, 1 skein.
NEEDLES Size 1½ (2.5 mm) (see Notes). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
NOTIONS Markers (m); cable needle (cn); tapestry needle.
GAUGE 40 sts and 55 rnds = 4" (10 cm) in patt. 33 sts and 48 rnds = 4" (10 cm) in St st.
FINISHED SIZE 6¾ (7¾, 9)" (17 [19.5, 23] cm) foot circumference and 10 (11, 11½)" (25.5 [28, 29] cm) from back of heel to tip of toe; foot length is adjustable. Socks shown measure 7¾" (19.5 cm).
