We asked knitwear designer and author Vicki Square to use the pattern for “Gentlemen’s Bicycle Stocking. Cable and Rib” from Weldon’s Practical Stocking Knitter, Third Series, included in Volume 2 of Weldon’s Practical Needlework (published in 1887), to reknit the socks. While the original pattern was intended for a man, Vicki’s version is sized for a woman’s medium.

Materials:
Gauge: 9 sts and 11 rows = 1 inch (2.25 cm)
Finished size: Leg length from ankle to top cuff, 14 inches (25.6 cm); foot length, 9¾ inches (24.0 cm); heel height, 2½ inches (6.4 cm)
