Carol Huebscher Rhoades adapted the pattern for Child's Fancy Knit Sock from Weldon's Practical Needlework, Volume 1. Carol says about knitting from Weldon's patterns: "Working from nineteenth-century patterns takes some knowledge about yarn qualities, needle sizes, and stitch names, as well as enough knitting experience to recognize and fix errors and figure out the sometimes vague instructions.
"Even if you don’t want to make any of the projects in the books, just reading the patterns offers excellent information about the history of knitting and the social/cultural context of knitting in the nineteenth century in Victorian England. It’s fun to see the styles for children and adults. Although many garments are a bit lavish with their bobbles, heavy trims, and additional embellishments, it is surprising how useful and wearable much in Weldon’s still can be."
