Work such as this was produced in sweatshops, cottages, and genteel parlors for a half-century and more. It was used for trim on corset covers and other unmentionables as well as for bedspreads, ball gowns, and banquet cloths. Countless antimacassars and doilies depended on the simple stitches of Irish crocheted lace; they became an emblem of a whole era of interior decoration.
