This sweater was inspired by a binge-watch of the 1990s TV series Northern Exposure. In one of the later seasons of the series, Dr. Fleischman goes to live in a shack in a remote Alaskan fishing camp. If you were living off the grid in Alaska and had only one sweater, you’d want it to be hearty, hard-wearing, comfortable, and warm.
We chose a sturdy, worsted-weight Suffolk wool yarn from Mountain Meadow Wool, grown and processed in Wyoming.
YARN Mountain Meadow Wool Suffolk (100% Suffolk wool; 200 yd [183 m]/3½ oz [100 g]; worsted weight): Marigold, 7 (7, 8, 9, 10) (10, 11, 12, 13, 14) skeins.
NEEDLES Size 7 (4.5 mm): 32" (80 cm) circular (cir). Size 6 (4 mm): 16" (40 cm) and 32" (80 cm) cir and set of double-pointed (dpn). Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.
NOTIONS Marker (m); stitch holder; tapestry needle.
GAUGE 21 sts and 28 rnds = about 4" (10 cm) in K6, P2 Rib patt on larger needle.
FINISHED SIZE 36½ (39½ , 42¾ , 45¾ , 48¾ ) (51¾ , 54¾ , 58, 61, 64)" (92.5 [100.5, 108.5, 116, 124] [131.5, 139, 147.5, 155, 162.5] cm) bust circumference. Pullover shown measures 42¾ " (108.5 cm); modeled with 4¼" (10.5 cm) of ease.
