Leaves and More Leaves Shawl

About This Pattern

This shawl reinterprets a leaf-patterned border from Weldon’s Practical Needlework using naturally dyed yarn that highlights its graceful texture. The Shetland-style construction keeps the project engaging, with each of the three sections worked in a different direction.

A change in needle size between the garter-stitch triangle and the lace edging helps the fabrics align and gives the finished piece an even, fluid drape. The leaf motif—shaped with eyelets and outlined by a purl column—adds movement and structure without feeling fussy. The Double Rose Leaf Border first appeared in Weldon’s in 1887, but it translates beautifully to modern yarns and sensibilities.

Materials

YARN Wool & Palette Fingering (100% Merino/Rambouillet wool; 225 yd [206 m]/50 g; fingering): Fern, 4 skeins.

NEEDLES Sizes 4 (3.5 mm) and 6 (4 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge. Interchangeable circulars in lengths of 24"–32" (60–80 cm) are strongly recommended; see Notes.

NOTIONS Markers (m); tapestry needle.

GAUGE 22½ sts and 55 rows = 4" (10 cm) in garter stitch using smaller needles, after blocking. Gauge is not critical for this project, but a different gauge will affect finished size.

FINISHED SIZE 59" (150 cm) wide and 22" (56 cm) high at center, after blocking.
