Ikat fabrics range from stripes of beautiful colors that shift slowly across a piece of woven fabric to incredibly detailed patterns and figurative scenes. The Malay word ikat (pronounced ee-kaht) means to bind or knot, and ikat techniques have been used in many parts of central Asia and beyond. Unlike other resist-dyeing techniques, such as shibori or batik, that use bound or resist areas of cloth to create images, ikat uses resist-dyeing on the yarn before it becomes cloth. The yarn is carefully measured and aligned on a loom so that predetermined areas come together to create images.
