The women of the Eastern Mediterranean region knew that the fine art of knotted needle lace could be readily worked anytime and anywhere. Once you’re familiar with the basic knot stitch of oya and bebilla, the work progresses faster than most other needle-lace techniques. The circular doily edging, an excellent project on which to sharpen your skills before attempting the flowers, can be finished in an evening or two.
Materials: Circular Doily Edging: Hem-stitched circular linen doily center, 8 inches (20 cm) in diameter #30 or # 40 DMC or LBH cordonnet thread Tapestry needle, size 26 Small safety pin Flower Motifs: #80 cotton tatting thread, green for the base and two colors for the flowers Tapestry needle, size 26 Handkerchief, scarf, or fabric Originally published in PieceWork July/August 1996
