This two-piece cap is patterned after linen or silk caps of the Regency era and much earlier eras. Used as a night cap, this version keeps modern ears toasty warm on frosty nights. The cap is knitted in two pieces, a long rectangle and a “D” shaped back. The Fair Isle pattern on the sides and top of the cap is a mirrored diamond derived from a group of fabrics known as point twills.
The back of the cap sports a small scale diced pattern. Shaping for the cap back follows the checkerboard pattern. Sewing these two pieces together is simplified when pattern pieces are blocked beforehand and carefully eased before sewing the long rectangle onto the back using a whipstitch.
