This shawl isn’t vegan, but it is gluten-free. Fulling its wool center stripe creates ruffled edges that you’ll have fun styling for warmth or just for dramatic effect.
Weavers are warned against mixing fibers willy-nilly because, after wet-finishing, they might pucker, becoming wavy and distorted; but what if this was taken too far. . . . How cool would that be? In this case, centering the wool in the middle of the scarf allowed the Tencel on the sides to remain at 20 picks per inch while the wool areas shrank down to 50 percent of the original length, creating a felted center with ruffles along both edges—ooh la la!
