Sunrise Bloom Napkins

Weave a set of beautiful napkins using all four tabby weft colors, or make them distinct but related by using a different tabby weft color in each one.

About this Project

Designer Lauren Erickson has always been drawn to shades of pink: light pink lends a sense of traditional elegance, especially in home décor; coral evokes images of brightly colored buildings on the French Riviera; and hot pink embodies drama and youthfulness. She enjoys combining warm pinks in analogous groups with orange and yellow, and finds that color gradients provide balance and structure to a design. This project was inspired by a baby blanket in Susan Wilson’s book Weave Classic Crackle & More that features a gradation of the same colors in both the warp and the ground weft. Lauren loved the crosswise gradient and the nuanced color interactions it created. Keeping her favorite colors in mind, she designed a set of napkins around that same crosswise gradation using a draft from Mary Meigs Atwater.

Structure Crackle.

Equipment 4-shaft loom, 20" weaving width; 12-dent reed; 2 shuttles; 5 bobbins.

Yarns
Warp: 8/2 cotton (3,360 yd/lb; Maurice Brassard), #100 Naturel, 63 yd; #1330 Rose foncé, #1317 Saumon, #5893 Melon, and #431 Jaune foncé, 287 yd each.

Weft: 8/2 cotton, #100 Naturel, 810 yd; #1330 Rose foncé, #1317 Saumon, #5893 Melon, and #431 Jaune foncé, 180 yd each.

Width in the reed: 19 ³⁄₁₂".

Woven length: (measured under tension on the loom) 80".
Finished size: (after wet-finishing and hemming) four napkins, 15½" × 16" each.
